GATESVILLE (Texas) — From Monday to Friday, women from the Texas Department of Criminal Justice Woodman Campus, Gatesville, spend six hours each week working toward becoming RV technicians.

Stephanie Farris, a student at the University of Washington, says that she is not tired.

It’s the weekend, and I get to relax. But, it’s Monday for me. “When can I return to school?” Farris asked. ‘,” Farris said.

Angela Gilbreth says that she stumbled across the class while looking for something to do.

Gilbreth stated, “It’s filled up a void that I didn’t even know I had.”

Gilbreth Farris, and Tamara Lewis were all brought to the Woodman Campus by various circumstances. They have not only found a job, but also hope in this program.

Gilbreth stated, “I have gained confidence from this program and it has helped me to develop and improve myself internally.”

The person I want to be is not just the label I wear, or the lifestyle I live. I want someone who can help me be more than that.

These women, in a place that seemed hopeless and alone, found hope and community.

Octavia, a graduate from the program says that the encouragement she received from classmates enabled her to complete her degree.

Watson explained that “we all helped each other, as the girls before me handed me notes and I then passed stacks of them on.”

This group offers more than a simple class. It brings with it a feeling of accomplishment and community.

“I remember the last time I ran outside through the water, and was all like ‘I’ve done it’. Farris added, “It’s a great accomplishment and you feel like a winner.”

After completing the course, students will be RV certified technicians. The RV technicians will be capable of handling everything from electrical problems to plumbing issues.

They will also have the ability to progress in their life.

Lewis stated, “I believe this will be something that helps us rebuild our lives. You know, we have lost so much since coming here.”

Once you arrive, everything is taken away from you. Just being given this chance is great. It feels as if there’s nowhere to go. It’s huge.”

Ron Hoover RV representatives, who are partnering with Windham Schools Districts in order to offer this course, claim that there’s a growing demand for RV workers.

We have a major problem within our industry. Mike Anthony, Vice President for Consumer Affairs said: “We need technicians.”

We’re self-serving in part because we have technicians. We are fortunate to have this opportunity.

Anthony explains that the company cares about hiring workers who are qualified, no matter where they obtained their certification.

Two applicants have already been interviewed and one has been hired.
