A manager of a Pleasant Hill shop who stopped a retail theft describes the desperate situation that businesses are facing.
Estates Consignments has a front door that says “locked” even though it is open. Customers are allowed in by the security guard.
There have been so many attempts to break into the store that it has installed 48 cameras.
The store was closed last Monday at the exact time of closing. There was just one person in it, a woman wearing a stripe dress, who had been on the telephone. Employees said that as she was leaving, she had tried to open the door when a group of six men in masks ran up and forced their way inside.
Albert Marcu, the store manager, heard the noise in front.
Marcu, a CBS Bay Area reporter said: “When I looked at it, I knew that something was going on.” Marcu told CBS news Bay Area that the sledgehammers were aimed at the jewelry case in the rear.
The robbers are seen in the video advancing on the jewel cases, but Marcu draws a pistol and points it at them.
When they arrived, I told them I had a pistol, so that they would be cautious. They dropped their sledgehammers. “They got scared, and ran away,” said he.
The robbers rushed out the front door and piled into two cars waiting for them as the police car arrived, following both vehicles.
Marcu said, “My front-facing salespeople started screaming and shouting.” They were terrified.”
Marilou Rodrguez, one of the victims is still traumatized.
She said, “Yeah I keep praying… before I go to work.” She said, “I pray that nothing ever happens again.” “Nothing happens again.”
Marcu says he doesn’t know if any of the suspects have been arrested. The police will not tell him. But he is skeptical that anything bad would happen to them even if there were.
Many of his business colleagues have told him that they’re robbed every day. Marcu’s van was stolen and used in the crash that hit a Kohls on Thanksgiving.
Look around. What causes all of these events? They don’t even get punished. “They go out again and commit crimes, which puts peoples’ lives at risk,” said he. We work hard. Many people do. In a second, we can lose it all. Not just me. Not just me. Many people have lost their jobs because of these things. “Stores are closing up left and right.”
Pleasant Hill Police would not confirm whether the suspects had been arrested in the attempted robbery. They said the case was “still being investigated.” Marcu is not alone in believing that the justice reform pendulum has gone too far and left those who are still on its tail to deal with themselves.
He said that “crime without punishment leads to more crime.”
