On Wednesday, December 13, 2022 marks one year after 16 tornadoes spun from a powerful storm system which swept through North Texas.
Grapevine was hit by two of these tornadoes, causing damage to 40 buildings. At least five people were injured.
I was off on that particular day. “I was actually off that day. “I knew there was a possibility of severe storms but the day ended up being extremely active,” Juan Hernandez, a weather forecaster with National Weather Service, Fort Worth, said. “We live in tornado alley. “You think that spring is the time when tornadoes are expected out here. But as I always tell people, ‘Tornadoes can happen at any time’.”
Grapevine Mills and Sam’s Club, two of the largest businesses in the city, both suffered damage. The results were very different.
First, the tornado in Grapevine caused two large roof holes at Sam’s Club. This resulted in significant damages inside the store. The company then announced months later that the Sam’s Club was permanently closed due to the extensive damage.
A short EF-1 tornado hit Grapevine Mills a few miles to the east. Multiple air conditioners were ripped off the roof of the mall, skylights over the food court were smashed, and water was damaged in multiple stores.
The mall is still open, despite the initial cleanup.
In a recent statement, mall management told NBC 5 that they were proud of their team and the retailers who worked so hard to make Grapevine Mills a welcoming and safe environment for employees and shoppers. While we’ve made great progress, some work is still in process. This ongoing work does not disrupt our shopping experience.
