Officials say that fire crews extinguished a fire on Ryegate terrace after residents alerted the firefighters to smoke emanating from a house on Monday morning.
A neighbor reported to the Monroe Volunteer Fire Department that firefighters had been called at Ryegate terrace around 6:30 am after noticing smoke behind a house.
The firefighters found the flames from the back of the home, entered the house by force and contained the fire in the original room. The residents weren’t home and there were no injuries.
Officials said that although the fire damage to the house was minimal, the smoke damage caused by the remainder of the home made it uninhabitable. Nevertheless, officials said that the residents had found alternative accommodation for now.
Officials said that in addition to Monroe fire departments, Stepney and Stevenson volunteers and a team from Long Hill Fire Department assisted while White Hills Fire Department covered the station to cover other calls. Monroe Police, EMS, and Fire Marshals also attended the scene.
The fire marshal said that the fire started unintentionally, and it was likely caused by a malfunction of equipment. The neighbors and their son called 911 as soon as they noticed the smoke, and then called the home owner to ensure they weren’t in any danger.
They said that if it weren’t for the firefighters, fire damages would have been far more severe. The home had also working smoke alarms that were sounding as firefighters arrived. The fire was out within 15 minutes of arriving, but crews were on the scene for 2 hours to do an overhaul and ventilate.
