Police said that an illegal firecracker was operating from a two-story home in Loni, where an explosion on Saturday blew the roof down and crushed seven people under the rubble.
Imran, a boy aged 16 who died from injuries Saturday night, brought the death toll to three. Alisha, 15, and Alina (15) died after being pulled out of the rubble by a rescuer and taken to hospital just hours after the collapse. Imran died during treatment on Sunday morning.
An explosion in Roopnagar Colony ravaged the home around 11am on Saturday. The police initially claimed that the explosion was caused by a damaged gas cylinder, which collapsed the house’s roof and the wall supporting it. Police confirmed Sunday that neighbors had claimed the residents were using illegal crackers.
DCP Vivek Yadav, DCP Rural, told TOI on Sunday that Shariq was arrested. Shariq had rented the house and was suspected to be running an illegal factory. He clarified, however, that the cause of the explosion which brought the roof down is not yet known. It could have been a cylinder. On Saturday, a damaged cylinder had been recovered.
We recovered materials that were used in the manufacture of firecrackers. Shariq has been questioned on the source of the materials used and the way he planned to sell them. “If it turns out that there are other individuals involved, then they too will be investigated,” said the DCP.
Shariq was charged under the IPC sections 308 and 304, which are both culpable murders. The explosion happened when he was away from home.
Four teenagers – Shahista (36) Noori (18), Geeta 30) and Mahvis (38), are currently receiving treatment.
ACP Rajneesh Kumar Upadhyay stated that a team of forensic experts was currently examining the samples in order to determine what caused this explosion.
A forensic team as well as a canine squad was called. It is not clear if it was an explosion caused by a firecracker or if the explosion occurred because of a cylinder. He added, “We believe there may have been other workers present but that they had fled prior to the explosion.”
DCP said, “Ghaziabad Police is coordinating with officials from the fire department to inspect this spot.”
