Ukraine has used drone boats or unmanned surface vehicles to attack both the Black Sea Fleet and Moscow. The Russian Ministry of Defense claims to have thwarted at least two attacks. However, photos and videos show that damage was done in the Russian capital.

A major fire was seen in a video taken today at the fuel oil terminal of Novorossiysk. It is unclear if it was caused either by an accidental accident, a hostile act, or a drone attack.

Around 4:00 am local time on Sunday, Russian air defence units shot down a Ukrainian drone above Moscow.

The drone, after being exposed to the air defense weaponry, changed its path of flight and crashed into a building that was not residential in the Krasnopresnenskaya area near Moscow. This information came from the Ministry on Telegram.

In footage taken from Moscow, an exhibition centre located near the Krasnopresnenskaya Embankment was destroyed.

The Russian air defence units shot down a Ukrainian drone over Moscow around 4 AM local time.

The ministry announced on Telegram that a non-residential structure in Moscow’s Krasnopresnenskaya area was hit by a drone following exposure to air defence weapons.

A damaged exhibition centre was seen in footage taken from Moscow. It is located on the Krasnopresnenskaya Embankment near the Moskva River.

Sergei Sobyanin said in a Telegram message that although the UAV wreckage fell close to the Expo Center it did not cause any significant damage. Sobyanin said that emergency services had arrived on scene but there were no reported casualties.

Unconfirmed reports suggest that there were more than two drones involved in the raid, as was true of previous Ukrainian raids. At least according to one video at least, one UAV crash in Moscow caused a big explosion. Reuters reported that a witness heard “a powerful blast” and called the news agency.

The Russian news agency TASS stated that a wall at Pavilion 8 of the Exhibition Center had collapsed partially. Some reports mention damage to the facade and roof, while others report drone debris on the ground.

TASS reports that the area affected by this collapse is approximately 30 square metres.

According to reports, 2,000 people had been evacuated as a direct result of the attack by the drone. Photos show large crowds outside the exhibit center.

RIA Novosti reported that the evacuation occurred because of a hoax telephone call about “the arrival of a Drone” around 2:00 PM.

Maxim Reshetnikov, Minister for Economic Development in Russia, is claimed by the pro-Russian SHOT Telegram account. The caller’s identity is not known.

According to SHOT, the phone call originated from Ukraine.

This call appears to be a sign of a shift in Ukraine’s strategy, as it is a conscious effort to create more chaos. It is not clear where the phone call originated. There are many possible suspects. These include Ukrainian agents working in Russia, local activists or partisans, and even just someone who is troublesome.

The drone attack also caused disruptions in the air traffic into and out of Moscow Airports. However, authorities have not explicitly attributed this to it.

Rosaviatsiya (the Russian Federal Agency for Air Transport) announced that temporary restrictions would be implemented at Vnukovo and Domodedovo airports, Sheremetyevo airport, and the Zhukovsky airport, which is a joint military-civil airport.

Rosaviatsiya reported that the restrictions for incoming and departing flights had been lifted by 4:30 Moscow time. Seven flights have been diverted from Nizhny Novgorod to St. Petersburg and another flight to Minsk in Belarus.

The fact that Moscow was once again attacked by drones indicates that these strikes have become fairly commonplace, even though we do not know the type of drones used in this instance.

Overnight, Russian warships destroyed an unmanned boat in the Crimea, which is occupied by Russia. This was about 150 miles south of Sevastopol – a Black Sea Fleet major base.

Unconfirmed media reports do not confirm that the corvettes being claimed as having destroyed the drone are the vessels which were actually targeted in the drone attack. According to TASS the drone was brought down by the “standard weapons” mounted on Pytlivyy a Krivak class frigate and Vasily Bykov a Project 22160 patrol ship.

Novorossiysk Fire

Today, Novorossiysk – one of the biggest ports along the Black Sea – saw a large fire at the fuel oil terminal.

Ukraine had previously targeted this type of infrastructure, in Crimea as well as on the border with Russia. It is not clear whether or not there was a drone attack, but it could have been a hostile act. In recent months there has been a number of fires that are similar to this, but the causes cannot be directly linked with attacks.

TASS said that “the fuel oil terminal is operating normally. 40.5 million tonnes of oil has already been exported from this facility since the start of the year.”

The agency reported that wooden pallets ignited at a terminal for cargo on Markova Street, Novorossiysk. This caused a fire to spread over 1,300 square metres (14,000 square foot) before the firefighters could extinguish it. So far, no injuries or deaths have been reported.

According to the videos available and the unconfirmed reports, the fire appears to have spread at least petroleum products.

Officially, the Russians claim that a fire was accidentally started and quickly put out. However, they have been known to try to portray incidents as accidental. Major industrial accidents in Russia are common.

Officials in Crimea who are Russian have not yet provided much information on the drone strike. Mikhail Razvozhaev said in a Telegram that there was no need for concern, but revealed that “training exercises” were being conducted, which included live fire.

Novorossiysk, located on the Black Sea’s eastern shore, has repeatedly been targeted by Ukraine due to its naval port.

Kyiv is yet to comment, despite the fact that Ukrainian officials have become more open in their discussions about drone attacks.

When you add up all the recent attacks and attempted attacks, it becomes clear that Ukrainian forces are using unmanned platforms to exert pressure on Russia. This type of attack is more likely to occur as the counteroffensive flags, with their increasing scope and complexity.
