On July 24, 2023 a powerful storm tore through the Neuchatel mountains, damaging La Chaux-de-Fonds. A construction worker died when a crane collapsed in winds of more than 135mph. The storm hit at 11:15 am local time.

Police sources say that in response to the call for “a probable tornado”, over 80 firefighters and police responded. They caused massive damages to houses and injured at least 40 people. The Sellita factory, and the employees who work there, were adversely affected by this damage.

Sebastien Chammontet is the Head of Innovation and Marketing at Sellita. He said that an entire roof from a nearby company was detached and fell on our three buildings. At the time, a person in the building was hurt and being treated at the hospital.

Sellita’s facilities have severe exterior damage and cracked windows. They require a coordinated effort to fix them.

Chaulmontet has announced that the restaurant is reopening after the holiday season on the 14th of August after cleaning. We’ll try to restore the restaurant as quickly as we can, even though the reconstruction will be much more difficult. Sellita plays a vital role in the industry and strives to gain your trust and provide service for your clients even during difficult times.

The storm appeared out of the blue, and its strength surprised residents. The storm’s size and speed can be seen in videos taken at a distance. The storm’s destruction is captured in videos taken at the time. The storm destroyed and overturned cars. Large overhead powerlines were brought down across the roads, homes and roofs. Forested areas and residential buildings were also destroyed.

The La Joux-Perret Manufacture is only 500m away from Sellita. As a result, the parent company of both brands quickly gathered to assess any damages. The facility was abandoned due to the summer holiday and the tornado seemed wider than 250 feet. This had not been seen for over a hundred years. This manufacturing company escaped the worst of it.

Savary said to Hodinkee, “Our team is all safe.” The CFO visited our factory and found that there was only minor roof and water damage. We are very fortunate, however, as we only live 500 metres from Sellita which suffered much more. The industry is on vacation, or there would have 10,000 people more in La Chaux-de-Fond. “Injuries could have been far more serious.”

Savary says that such storms in Switzerland are uncommon, and he is not sure how fast buildings or factories can be restored.

He says that the area is affected by hailstorms and storms each year. His understanding is that the last such storm occurred in 1926. According to the information that he gathered, it appears that more than 5,000 out of 7,000 houses in La Chaux-de-Fonds suffered some damages.

Alan Marmy of BFMTV described the storm’s chaos as a “total mess” that left no time for locals to prepare or react. He said that there was “no alert”.

BFMTV spoke with Jean-Daniel Jeanneret of the municipal council of Laval, who stated that protective measures were not possible due to the nature and the magnitude of the incident.

Chaulmontet acknowledges the unfortunate timing of this damage. Industry sources estimate that over one million Sellita movement are used every year.

He says that the overheating in the industry made this year a “tense one.” We hope that it will not affect delivery. The logistics and parts departments have not suffered any damage. That’s important. “It has affected assembly lines, but they will be fixed by August 14th.”

A hotline was set up last night to allow people to report any damage. The police also asked that they avoid La Chaux-de-Fonds because it is still difficult to get to. Local officials say that infrastructure repairs and improvements may take time. Rail traffic at La Chaux-de-Fonds may also be disrupted for a while.

Breitling, Cartier and other local watchmakers did not answer calls. TAG Heuer also did not reply to inquiries about possible damage. If we receive more information, we’ll update the story.
