A storm with high winds caused damage in the Chubut province, including roofs being blown away and boats sinking.

The weather phenomena on Tuesday caused some of the worst damage. A part of the airport’s structure fell in the parking area and the entire facility was forced to shut down due to the extent of damage. According to the local media, the airport will remain closed today until 12 noon.

After being shaken up by waves, a vessel docked at the Caleta cordova dock also went down and listed starboard.

In several areas of Comodoro Rivadavia – the largest city in Chubut – signs and vehicles have been damaged.

The Civil Defense Directorate has released several recommendations to help prevent injury. These include: do not leave your house unless it’s absolutely necessary; avoid sheltering near walls, trees and poles, especially power poles, and only drive when you have to.

The Chubut Ministry of Education, for the sake of safety and the order of all the community members, has temporarily suspended the classes at all the educational institutions on the Atlantic Coast, whether they are primary, secondary or higher level.

The portfolio also stated that the situation was being evaluated in order to determine if classes could resume today. Parents and students are advised to pay attention to media reports.

On Tuesday afternoon, the province lifted its red alert and restored all public services.

According to an official announcement, “public activities and private ones are slowly returning to normal as a result of the information from the National Meteorological Service.”

“Currently, about 80% of the City has power. There is intense work being done to bring electricity back to those neighborhoods that are still without it. However, the Community is advised to be cautious due to trees and poles falling in different areas.”

Hurricane winds have affected 90% of the fuel outlets in Comodoro Rivadavia, and nearby towns.

The affected service station reported that the roofs on the beaches had blown up and furniture, pumps, and mini-market windows were damaged. Fuel sales have been suspended until further notice at the affected stations.

Osvaldo L., Chubut Station Leader said: “We do not regret any injuries or deaths amongst the staff of fuel vending machines because the restrictions on movement and inability to deliver fuel will continue until weather conditions improve.”
