On Wednesday, in a situation of growing ecological and humanitarian catastrophe on a river which forms part of front-line in the 15 month war in Ukraine, the authorities rescued hundreds of trapped people on the roofs of their homes and provided drinking water for areas that were flooded due to a fallen dam.

It has taken more than one year for the Kakhovka Hydroelectric Dam to collapse and empty its Dnieper River reservoir.

There’s no doubt that thousands have lost access to drinking water. They are also homeless. Land mines and crops have destroyed. And electricity is on the way.

Some people were stranded in Russia’s occupied territories, with streets and roofs only accessible by boat. It was more like a natural disaster than a war. Other refused to go.

Three people have been killed in this disaster, according to the mayor. The area is home to more than 60,000 residents. According to officials, at least 4,500 people were evacuated on both sides of river, from Russia and Ukraine. But the real scale of this disaster hasn’t been disclosed. Russian authorities claim that 15,000 homes are flooded in Kherson.

Kherson is a region that Moscow has illegally occupied since September. Its dam and water reservoir provide irrigation and fresh water to southern Ukraine. This reservoir is also used to supply water for the Crimean Peninsula that Russia illegally annexed in 2014.

Ukraine controls the western Dnieper bank, while Russia controls its low-lying east side.

Depleted Kakhovka’s reservoir will prevent the irrigation of crops for many years. Moreover, losing the Kakhovka reservoir makes it difficult to rebuild and restart the hydroelectric power plants that were destroyed. It also ensures future cooling water needed for the restarted nuclear power plant at Zaporizhzhia.

A day after the incident, the exact cause was still unknown. Others argued the dam was destroyed because of military motives. Kofman concluded that, in any case, Russia is to blame, whether through their actions or control over the dam.

Kofman from the Center for Naval Analyses in the United States told PBS NewsHour it could cause permanent damage to drinking water and agriculture.

It was not possible to determine how many residents were still in the affected area due to fighting.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the Ukrainian President, met with government officials in order to assess damages caused to farms, wetlands and other properties by “an ecocide crime” and an “environmental strike from which it will take years to recover.” They also discussed how to supply drinking water to local residents.

Zelenskyy stated in a YouTube clip that it’s impossible to estimate how many chemicals or oil products that are stored in areas that have been flooded will eventually end up in the rivers and ocean.

According to Ukraine’s Agriculture Ministry, “the fields in the South could turn into deserts by next year.”

Lera told The Associated Press, her first floor in Oleshky was flooded.

The world around us seems to be floating. The people on the rooftops are asking for assistance, but they’re not being evacuated,” Lera explained.

Lera claims that the majority of Russian troops have fled Oleshky after the dam accident, even though a military post still exists and people on boats trying to escape were attacked by soldiers.

Yevhenryschuk, the mayor of Oleshky, has left the city since the Russians have taken control. He says that hundreds are in need of evacuation and three people died. Oleshky has 90% of its area flooded, and there is a severe humanitarian crisis as a result of the lack of food, electricity, clean water and drinking water.

According to officials, the Kazkova-Dibrova Zoo was submerged in water at Nova Kakhovka and only ducks and swans managed o escape. Flooding killed thousands animals, according to Mayor Vladimir Leontyev.

According to AP hundreds of animals trapped at Oleshky require urgent rescue.

To reach safety in Kherson, residents waded knee-deep through water or used rubber rafts. In the video, rescuers carried people out of danger and a triangular roofing structure was seen floating downstream.

Leontyev stated that in Nova Kakhovka (Russia-controlled) on the Dnieper’s eastern bank, seven people are missing, but they believe them to still be alive.

Vladimir Putin, in his initial public remarks on the Kakhovka disaster, reiterated Moscow’s position that Ukraine had destroyed the Kakhovkadam.
