Storms that raged on Saturday caused problems in many parts of the town. The storm caused many inconveniences, including falling branches and trees that in one instance led to a traffic accident. Other problems included roofs being blown off and power cuts. The gusts of wind “blew up”, the solar panels installed by the Popular Electricity Cooperative in the North Transformer Substation, and knocked the sign down at a bookshop.

On a tour through the city, we saw countless trees with broken branches in streets, sidewalks, and green areas. The National Meteorological Service reported that the storm struck the city from 8:35 pm to 11:40 pm. During that time, there was a 4 millimeter rainfall and wind gusts of up to 85 kilometres per hour.

The Police Fire Department has confirmed that they were called to “many situations” and that their work ended at two in the afternoon. The main issue was that the national routes were blocked (due the the falling of trees and branches) and they had to be reopened quickly to avoid becoming crowded because of the flow of vehicles.

Sources from the police revealed, in this sense, that while performing clearance duties on National Route 5 two officers discovered a car that fell into a drain ditch between Evangelista and Collector Street. It was a Renault 21 driven by a couple aged 46 and 48 from General Pico. They were travelling along the route when they saw a tree in the road and had to do a manoeuvre to avoid it. .

The two were transported to a gas station where they were put under protective custody. Emergency Medical Service personnel assisted the woman because of a headache she was experiencing as a consequence of her impact with the windshield.

A eucalyptus fell onto the asphalt strip in front of Federal Tire. Firefighters removed it. On Route 5, near Mac Allister Field, there were several other trees which fell onto the asphalt.

They also pointed out “many roof explosions” but none were severe. The neighbors were scared and they only came because of the panic that was caused. Around 11:30 pm, firefighters approached Urquiza & Mansilla where the sign for a bookshop had fallen.

The CPE’s structure was also damaged, and this is a serious matter. Sources from the entity revealed that solar screens installed at the North Transformer Substation on Joaquin Ferro & Catamarca were blown up. The solar screens were installed at a cost of over 12000 dollars.

A palm tree that fell in a field on Jujuy Street near Santa Cruz did not pose any danger. A second incident occurred at Stieben 1,500 where the police found a roof belonging to someone who lived at Parana 160. They clarified that “there were no injuries” in the case.

The report also noted “the falling of trees large and tall, but fortunately no human injuries.” In the Plazoleta de los Caldenes a strong wind broke a branch from one of the old specimens that were there. The iron structure was already in place to protect it. One of the large branches was destroyed by the strong gusts.

A tree fell on a home in Mariano Pascual between Luro y Valerga. Police and firefighters intervened. The 73-year old owner confirmed “broken cable” when they arrived at the scene.

A plant which was blocking a garage in La Rioja Street, too, had to be removed by firefighters. They then went to Government House on San Martin Avenue where fallen branches had obstructed access and exit. On Pueyrredon street at 1.200 meters, a tree had to be removed, just as in Tierno between Luro Vivas and Garay Vivas. Three trees fell in Santiago Alvarez between Trenel & Bernasconi. They stated that “firefighters chopped and cut them” to remove the trees.

CPE stated that the CPE transformers in Yapay, Hospital, Toay, APE-East and West were all affected by the storm. This left a large part of Santa Rosa without electricity. They said that “intensive” work was done in the early morning hours and that by Sunday, “the whole area had been restored.”

They explained in a press release that the “intense gusts of winds caused trees and branches to fall onto the powerlines, damaging the infrastructure, and activating the protection devices for feeders and the substations.” The storm had prevented progress because the safety of the workers was not assured. “As soon as the conditions permitted, crews began touring the out-of service feeders, and as soon as the dangers were eliminated, supply for users could be provided.”

CPE Telecommunications was also affected by this storm because of “the absence of electricity in certain areas”. Once the electricity was restored, TV and internet services were resumed.

Yesterday morning, the teams of technicians worked on “the solution to specific complaints in San Cayetano and two other areas around Federal Tire.”
