Fire was reported to the Montgomery County fire department at 12:25 pm. The spokesperson stated that more than $5,000,000 worth of damages were caused by this fire.
According to Pete Piringer, spokesperson for the Montgomery County Fire Department, an afternoon fire on Monday destroyed the roof at a Mormon Church located in Western Avenue. The damage was estimated to be more than $5 Million.
Smoke billowed from the steeple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Chevy Chase.
Piringer reported that it took over 100 firefighters to put out the fire until 2:30 pm. At that point, 90 percent of roof was already burned.
Piringer stated that there were dozens of firemen inside the church at the time of the collapse, but no serious injuries occurred. The fire caused no injuries, he said.
Piringer stated that officials are still investigating but it “appears accidental.”
Firefighters from D.C.’s Fire and Emergency Medical Services Department responded to the incident.
Western Avenue between Wisconsin Avenue and Connecticut Avenue had been closed as of 4:15 p.m. on Monday.
