There are no leads as to the perpetrators of vandalism in the Fredericton veterans’ section cemetery. It has been over a week.
Forest Hill Cemetery has had more than 20 gravestones defaced in the Royal Canadian Legion Section.
Don Swain, the president of Fredericton Legion says that he’s outraged at this graffiti.
Swain: “I’m sure the families will be shocked.”
It’s a shame, I think, that we act the way we do.
The oldest headstones date back at least 30 Years.
Terri-Ann McTiernan spent the day Wednesday with her husband Mark cleaning off spray paint on their uncles headstone.
McTiernan described the first time he saw it as “like a punch, and that doesn’t even make any sense.”
It’s painful. I don’t know what to say.
McTiernan is surprised that someone would disrespect veterans’ graves.
Why would someone do that? Why would anyone do this to our legion or the soldiers who have fought in defense of the country? McTiernan added, “It’s worse.”
The police believe that the vandalism was committed in two different incidents over recent weeks.
Martin Gaudet, Fredericton’s Police Chief said: “It is shameful to know that the headstones of our veterans have been defaced.”
Gaudet said that police were following up on leads in two cases involving vandalism.
The graffiti at Forest Hill Cemetery will be cleaned up in the next few days, according to those who run the cemetery.
The headstones are being protected by a protective layer.
Greg Ericson, Ward 8 Councilman & Lieutenant said: “I am concerned as a local councilman that Forest Hill Cemetery will not be able to afford to maintain their property with the money it is paying to cover this kind of vandalism.” Mayor of Fredericton.
Swain is hoping that the perpetrators will be brought to justice as Remembrance Day approaches.
Swain stated, “These people don’t know who has given them their freedom.”
Mary Wilson, the province’s Minister of Military Affairs said: “I’m deeply disappointed at the vandalism that occurred in Forest Hill Cemetery. This included the destruction to graves which belonged to ex-military members.”
