Ado-Ekiti – Five people narrowly avoided death Tuesday when the Ureje River overflowed along Federal Polytechnic Road in Ado Ekiti. The river caused havoc to the buildings around it.

Five people were reported to have come from the Ureje region. They made desperate attempts to cross a heavily-flooded bridge when they became overwhelmed by rapid water flow, which carried then into its valley.

Yesterday, an eyewitness in Ado Ekiti told journalists that some Hausa diver saved the elderly from drowning by waiting at the bridge and helping them cross.

Eyewitness: The five victims struggled to cross the high-tide bridge when they suddenly were washed by water. People waiting on the other side of the bridge called out the alarm. This attracted Hausa divers who rushed to the rescue.

As the rain submerged the buildings, millions of Naira worth of property was damaged.

Around 10 buildings in Eminrin Estate were damaged, and the residents lost millions of Naira worth of valuables.

The state government was called upon by one of the victims to assist them in their terrible situation. Mrs Julianah Ajulo said that her family had lost over N3million to the flooding.

She stated: “We were delighted when Biodun oyebanji arrived to drag the Ureje River at Eminrin. Never did we think that this would happen again. It is our third experience in 10 years. The state government must act urgently to resolve our problem. “We are deeply hurt by this event.”

In the meantime, Governor Oyebanji assured residents that the government will map out measures to rescue them and their properties if they are submerged in rainwater.

The Governor, who was represented by Chief Monisade Adeye and other government officials, assured the public during an assessment of the damage caused by this incident.

She replied: “We feel for those who have been affected by the flooding.” They won’t be abandoned by my government. All your concerns will be addressed quickly. “Governor Oyebanji is committed to the wellbeing of his people and will come to our aid.”

Oyebanji cautioned Ekiti residents about unwholesome practices, such as the reckless dumping and sewerage inside canals. He also warned against the construction of structures on waterways.
