A family-run business engaged the youths who caused a halt to shopping at a centre after they climbed on top of the roof and damaged shop fronts.
In recent months there has been an increase in dissocial behavior at Fortunestown Shopping Centre. Members of the community feel intimidated when they are accessing shops in the evenings.
In one incident on August 16th, a group consisting of about a dozen youths, many of whom had just graduated from elementary school, rendered the Springfield area uninviting.
SuperValu’s security had to shut its doors in order to stop the youths from entering the stores. They turned off the automatic access control to manually manage access.
The group damaged the lights and cables on the roof, and some of them kicked the shopfronts and trolley bay panels.
Video footage taken that night showed young people kick the shutters closed at Sahasrara Hair and Beauty. The family-run company employs seven people in the locality.
The salon identified the people involved in the incident. One of them is a young girl, who will be doing a work placement for a couple days to try and change her behavior.
The Echo quotes Gemma Madden as saying, “We’re a salon that is based in the community. We won a local salon award and we are now up for a second one. All of us are here from all over,” she said.
It’s getting worse. They hover here in the trolley bay on Thursdays and Fridays, which is a huge problem for us.
Some of my clients are intimidated by the darkness and won’t even come to the office in the evenings.
Our service charges will increase because of new security cameras and gates installed by the manager to enhance the safety of the shopping center.
I don’t believe they realize the impact of their sillyness. “I don’t think they realise the impact that their silliness is having.”
The employees would be out of work if anything happened to the salon. There’s more to it than that.
If any of these people came to my door asking for experience I would be happy to hire them.
They have more choices than I did when I had children.
Punishing people won’t do much, but we could show them they are more capable than they believe.
The Echo has received feedback from people who feel intimidated by the anti-social behavior in shopping centres in the evenings.
After the latest flare-up, Charlie O’Connor has echoed sentiments from the local community.
The Echo reports that Cllr O’Connor is sometimes intimidated by the people at the shopping center. “I go there myself some evenings, the night it opened, or I visit the post office in the middle of the day.
I got many reactions from the residents, especially from those in Raheen which is the closest estate.
I’ve also contacted the Gardai, and they have said that they will look into this.
It’s not good enough. Like many people, I want to know the origin of these teens.
As we can see from the photos, some of them are very young. It’s appalling.
What’s happening with anti-social behavior is disgusting.
The residents were concerned about the behaviour of their shops and did not want it to be a problem.
Brona Reilly, the Superintendent of Tallaght Garda Station acknowledged that there was a need for increased patrolling in this area.
I wish to inform you that the matter was brought to all patrols as well as to Neighbourhood Policing Unit. They will be continuing to conduct proactive patrols in public places, which have been identified by young people to be areas where they congregate, to deter and detect anti-social behavior.
